Chapter Ten

“She still won’t see me?”

Shaking her head and taking a seat in the largest red velvet office chair Jude had ever seen, Jessica sighed, "No, the door is still locked, and the only answer I got was ‘Go away.'"

“Has she talked to Jackie yet?”

“Definitely not,” Mrs. Claus' eyebrows shot up her forehead, and her eyes got as big as saucers. "Caille has put specially designed, magical boobytraps all over Christmas Village to keep Jacqueline out. If Frost dares step a foot within a hundred miles of here, or even think about flying over, she’ll be turned into a grub worm.”

Falling into an overstuffed green-plaid chair, Jude huffed, “Well, at least I’m allowed to come in.”

“Yes, you are, Son and take that as a sign that she really does love you.”

“I wish.”

Putting her elbows on her desk and her chin on her hands, Jessica smiled, “There’s no wishing to it, Jude. My sister loves you, she just hasn’t had a lot of practice at being anything but bratty and bitchy.” Giving a little nod, she continued, “Caille always thought she'd somehow drawn the short straw. That being asleep for half the year and then waking up just to make the North Winds howl and snowfall that she was somehow less than all the other Gods and Goddesses."

With a little more than sadness in her eyes and melancholy in her voice, she sighed, "I must've told her a million times how very important she is to all of us. How much we love her. And that without her, especially I would be lost."

“Me too,” Jude readily agreed. “I never thought I’d have a Mate. Definitely not one as beautiful as your sister.” Snickering half-heartedly, he added, “I admit I was freaked out when I saw her and realized she was the one and only Cailleach Bheur. I mean, history has been none too kind to her.”

“See, that’s the problem.”

“Yeah, I can see that now.” Sitting upright and scooting to the very edge of his seat, suddenly incredibly excited, Jude exclaimed, “And I think I know how to make it all better, but I’m gonna need your help.”

“If it makes my sister finally realize how much she really is loved then let’s hop to it.”
